Luxury vinyl is a
synthetic material that consists of four layers. The high-tech image layer
simulates the look of hardwood, stone, and ceramic flooring. Once this layer is
worn down, the flooring must be replaced. Therefore, high-quality brands have a
thick wear layer to protect the image. Some manufacturers even put an
additional protective coating on top of this transparent surface layer. A 20+
mil wear layer will provide enough protection to keep your floor looking new
even in high traffic areas of your home.
The core layer, which is
protected by the backing layer, is under the image layer. If a plank or tile
has a wood plastic composite (WPC) or a stone plastic composite (SPC) core, it
is waterproof. The former is made of wood byproducts, while the latter is made
of limestone. While both cores are tough, virtually indestructible SPC flooring
is superior. When comparing the two types of vinyl flooring, consider that WPC
includes a foaming agent, softer underfoot. Waterproof luxury vinyl flooring
can tolerate water for an extended period.
